Business Studies

Departmental vision and aims: To develop an awareness of the rationales of business to a wide range of students both as consumers and employees and as potential employers.

Learning objectives: 

Key Stage 4: GCSE: 
Students will be able to apply their knowledge and understanding to current Business issues for a business within the context of local, national and international situations. 

Key stage 5: AS/A2 Level
Students will gain a broad knowledge of business and develop an understanding of the relationships of business enterprise and the changing external environment;  Running Own Business experience available.

Clubs and Extra-Curricular Activities:  Young Enterprise Company Programme for Year13 students – Link Teacher Ms Carol Leckie;  Business Advisor Mr Alan Leslie, Bangor Local Council member.

Educational visits and trips: Business Studies visits link with curriculum topic areas for example production – Wright Coach Works Ballymena; Coca Cola factory Lisburn; Tayto factory Tandragee;  Aunt Sandra’s Confectionary factory Belfast;  ASDA  Supermarket – HR department.  

Students in Year13 and Year 14 liaise for specific units of work with local successful business such as Denroy Plastics Ltd and Whale Pumps Ltd and the Business Studies Department thank both these business for their continued support.

Subject/Departmental multimedia resources:  Subject specific resources such as Dream Weaver; Business Studies On-line; Yaca Paca teacher prepared resources/quiz materials;  triptico software and department material on media library. 

Subject revision resources:  Department prepared materials for all exam level students;  revision classes timetabled before exam sessions begin.  Students have access to BBC Bitesize materials as an example. 

Business links:  The Business Studies Department has developed links with Business in the Community forum offering job application and interview practice for yr 12 students; Visiting entrepreneurs – ‘How I made it’ interivews.
