Match Report: 2nd Round Medallion ShieldBangor Academyís decisive win against Friendsí School Lisburn (second team), 14 December 2019.

Saturday, 14 December 2019 saw Bangor Academy play in the second round of the Medallion Shield for only the second time in the schoolís history.  It was also a big milestone for the school to play on a Saturday, just like the grammar schools in the competition.

The match was played at Upritchard Park, the home of Bangor Rugby Club, on a bitterly cold but dry morning. The Academy boys got off to a great start, pinning the Friendsí team in their own 22 for the first 15 minutes, which resulted in a superb try scored by Josh Newell.

The Bangor team kept the pressure on Friendsí, refusing to let them play with any structure. The Bangor defence stood strong, and tackles from both the forwards and the backs were outstanding. Continued pressure saw Bangor finish the first half,5-0 up and very much in control of the game.

The second half started in a similar vein with some excellent pressure and defence led by Mason Williams whose dogged attitude meant Friendsí couldn't get any go-forward momentum. Bangorís pressure continued and it was inevitable that another score would come. This came from some excellent back play and finished off by the forwards with Sam Lennon crashing over to secure a second score the win.

The final whistle saw Uprichard Park erupting with cheers from the Bangor Academy players, parents and coaching staff (Davy, Monty & Daniel).  Reaching the third round of the Medallion Shield is a massive achievement for Bangor Academy and one that will push its rugby on to bigger and better things.  A fantastic team performance from all the boys involved.

A big thank you goes to Mr Pitts and Mr Donald for their continuing support in school and to Bangor RFC for their use of their facilities.
