Following the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, the East-West Programme promotes friendship and understanding between young people in Ireland and the UK.  Priority is given to projects emphasising respect and accommodation of difference through increased knowledge and insight into each others' culture.

At a British Council contact seminar in Cardiff in 2008 funding was granted for the ‘Coastal Connections’ projects between Beara Community School, Castletownbere, Co Cork and Pilton Community College, Devon, England.

We hosted our visitors from Beara Community School in April 2010. Pupils enjoyed their visit to the Ards Peninsula and Exploris. In June 2010 pupils from Pilton Community College enjoyed a trip to Portrush and the Giants Causeway.

In June 2011 pupils at Bangor Academy and Sixth Form College visited Pilton Community College, Devon, England. We were well looked after and had an action packed two days. On the first day pupils visited the school and pupils in their lessons, treated themselves to tea and cream scones, had a lovely meal in the evening, followed by ten pin bowling. On the second day we travelled to Croyde beach and soaked up the sun and had a game of volleyball. A fantastic time, we could have loved to stay for a few more days!!
