Leanne OSullivanThe annual Aspects Literary Festival came to Bangor Academy in the form of an inspirational young Irish poet, Leanne O’Sullivan.

She read from her two published collections of poems, Waiting for My Clothes and Cailleach: The Hag of Beara. Proving that poetry is not an elitist art form, she had no trouble engaging our Sixth Formers with poems such as “A Thing of Beauty” and “First Boyfriend” exploring such relevant themes such as what it is to be young, relationships, first love and the pressures exerted by society to be thin.

Judging by the discussion that followed, the Bangor Academy students found Leanne’s work and the real stories behind her poems fascinating. They even discovered a link to her home town in Beara, Co. Cork because Bangor Academy is involved in a Civic Link project with Leanne’s old secondary school, Beara Community College. It is a small island! Thanks to Aspects, we’ve found another literary link to help the next generation learn to love poetry!
