Health Fair Puts Teen Well Being in the Spotlight

Health Fair 2015

Fantastic speakers, over 31 enthusiastic exhibitors and delicious food made our first ever Teen Health Fair well worth attending, and hundreds did!

The afternoon session saw regular bus loads of schools from all over North Down arrive to sample everything from rugby tackling to ASDA's chef's 'study soup'; or to chat to experts on smoking cessation, library services, diabetes, asthma management, sexual health and eating disorders - to name but a few!

In the evening we were delighted to welcome Mayor of North Ards and Down, Alan Graham, local Alliance Councillors Stuart Anderson and Gavin Walker and, of course, all the parents who came to support the event.

There were several powerful presentations. Anyone who attended the one from FASA and heard Adam Owens' mother speak about how her son's life was stolen by (so-called) 'legal highs' will have felt it was worth coming to the fair for that alone. The sadness and loss in the eighteenth birthday card that Adam will not open on his birthday was a poignant symbol of a stolen future.

The Health Fair was the brain child of our school nurse, Kerry Tinman. Her energy and determination to organise this event ensured its success. She wanted to encourage an open approach to all the issues teenagers grapple with. Judging by the feedback, she has achieved that aim.  She and the team who worked with her would like to thank all the experts and organisations who attended.

Mr Pitts said:

"If there is one message to take from all the experts, it is to stay engaged in the lives of our teenagers. If we keep the lines of communication open, do things together, encourage them to talk about their lives and worries, eat healthily and have regular exercise then we are all better able to make adolescence a smoother ride."
