Remembrance Day - Dara Adopts a Co. Down Soldier

E-mail Print

Remembrance DayThank you to the brass ensemble, the Sixth Formers and the staff who led this year’s Remembrance Day services at Bangor Academy.

Poems, prayers and real soldiers’ stories, documents and artefacts gave us all food for thought. One student who has explored her interest further is History A-Level student Dara. You can watch Nationwide, RTE 1 at 7.00pm Wednesday 11th November on catch-up  to see all about her journey to France to research 23 year old William Heron’s story.

The RTE 1 programme features Dara, one of 32 secondary school pupils in Ireland selected for the “My Adopted Soldier Project”. One pupil from each of the 32 counties researched a fallen soldier from the Battle of the Somme in WWI.  Dara uncovered the story of William Heron,  a young man from Holywood and in June 2015 she travelled to France to find his grave. Follow the links to read Dara’s research and to see the programme.
