Art and Design StaffDepartmental vision and aims:

To provide a creative and inclusive environment in which all pupils can explore and enjoy a range of Art experiences.
Develop visual awareness through the study of the world around us and our personal experience.

Staff: Mrs J Boal (Head of Department), Miss H McCurdy, Mrs B Mackey, Mrs J Johnston, Mrs L Hamilton, Mrs A Adair.

Learning objectives:

Key stage 3:
In years 8, 9 and 10 we explore the key elements of art and design, introducing a range of skills and techniques. We learn about the work of artists, globally and locally and how they connect to our work.  In the summer term of year 8 we create self-portraits… “My favourite thing in year 8 was drawing my self-portrait.  My Mum still has it up on our wall!” (Year 8 pupil)

Key stage 4: GCSE
Building on the Key Stage 3 foundation, pupils will explore and develop their work through coursework (60%) and an externally set exam project (40%).  There is opportunity for pupils to work from first hand resources, visit galleries and Museums, study the work of others and experiment with a range of new techniques.  Pupils are encouraged to work with personal expression and imaginative thinking.

“I created a 3D ceramic sculpture for my final piece.  I never thought I could have done that!” (Year 12 Pupil)

Key stage 5: AS/A2 Level
Pupils at A Level are stimulated and challenged to further develop their skills in a more personal and analytical way.  The course encourages them “to present a personal, informed and meaningful response which demonstrates critical understanding and connections between visual, written and other elements.”

“In A level art I designed and produced my own screenprinted fabric, which I used to upholster two recycled chairs.” (Year 14 pupil)
