Rugby Rules - It’s Official!

Rugby RefsFour P.E. students put their rugby knowledge to the test as referees in a recent North Down mini-rugby tag tournament at Bangor Academy.

“Marcus, Mark, Jamie and I had to use all of our observational and communication skills to keep track of the very competitive matches we refereed between Sullivan Prep, Connor House, Crawfordsburn, Ballymagee, Ballyhome and Rockport.

Each of us got the chance to referee three matches so we could practice judging the application of rules and tactics and see how we managed attitude and behaviour on the pitch. It was an interesting experience to be on the other end of a whistle for a change! As Mark later commented: ‘I really enjoyed my day.

I never thought being a ref was so hard but this has opened my eyes to the job they have to do.’ As a memento of the day, every competitor and referee received a medal. It was a memorable day. We were delighted to be involved in helping to convey our passion for rugby to the next generation of players.

Thanks to Stephen Marshall, North Down Rugby Development Officer, who mentored us during the day.”
