Education Minister launched the North Down and Ards Shared Education initiative at Bangor Academy and Sixth Form College with The Academy, St. Columbanus’ and Bangor Grammar School. Education Minister, Peter Weir launched the North Down and Ards Shared Education initiative at Bangor Academy and Sixth Form College with The Academy, St. Columbanus’ and Bangor Grammar School this week.

Passed by the Assembly in March 2016, the Shared Education Bill lays out a requirement for schools to share experience and opportunities with each other, promote equality of opportunity and to foster respect for diversity. Eager to get started, three Bangor schools already have ambitious plans for the new academic year which they were keen to share with the Minister.

Matthew Pitts, Principal of Bangor Academy said:

“We are really excited about this new initiative. The Academy already has strong links with schools in North Down but the funding and support means we can collaborate to create even  greater integration in the local education system. It makes sense to me that we share resources, expertise and build a strong sense of community among our young people. When schools work together the potential for raising educational standards and building better community cohesion is only limited by our imaginations. We have already recruited staff to liaise between schools and they are busy creating a range of opportunities to build a strong foundation for the shared education vision.
