Government and Politics

Vision and aims:

We want pupils to become active citizens in the world around them through an understanding of the political process in Northern Ireland, the United Kingdom as well as other parts of the world to become informed future decision makers.  Pupils will be challenged to develop a range of skills through the study of politics that will empower and equip them moving forward into further education and eventually to a range of stimulating careers.

Learning objectives: 

Key stage 5: AS/A2 Level

Politics – Pupils study four different modules; Politics in Northern Ireland, British Politics, Political Power,
Politics in the USA
Pupils have a chance to investigate a range of political systems and become inspired to become active citizens who have the knowledge and insight to potentially influence their world.

Subject/Departmental pupil  achievements:
A huge majority of our A-level pupils progress to study at university.

Educational visits and trips:
Pupils visit Stormont to meet their local MLAs and put forward their views and questions.  Various programmes are offered at Queens University, University of Ulster as well as local media organisations and our pupils participate fully in these exciting opportunities.

Subject revision resources:
A-level pupils are encouraged to engage with politics through a range of media including newspapers, magazines, articles and online resources. Politics is endlessly moving and pupils are encouraged to keep their finger on the pulse of the ever changing political landscape.
