Department vision and aims:Modern Languages Staff
It is our aim that we help pupils to communicate effectively, to the best of their ability in French. We hope that this will be a worthwhile, enjoyable and valuable experience.  We hope that learning a modern language will help pupils develop as individuals and as contributors to society, the economy and environment.

Staff:
Linda Hamilton (Head of Department) Ruth Macartney, Stéphanie Ruelland, Sharon McBride, Emma Coulter and Ali McKay

Learning objectives

Key Stage 3:
Pupils will have the opportunity to consider their own culture and compare it to French culture. They can also find out about other countries using ICT based resources.  We aim to develop pupils’ oral, literacy and ICT skills so that they can communicate information and opinions about themselves, their lives and interests.

Key stage 4: GCSE:
Pupils in Years 11 and 12 are working towards a French GCSE qualification.

They will develop their language skills in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing through contexts relating to their own lives and that of other people:

Health and Lifestyle
Leisure and Holidays
Home and Environment
Work and Education

We aim to use practical teaching strategies and approaches to enable pupils to realise their full potential.

Clubs and Extra-Curricular Activities:
European Day of Languages is celebrated by everyone in the department on 26 September.  We celebrate this special day with games and activities in classes and in the library as well food, music and activities at lunch time.  There is a Languages club for year 8 pupils on a Thursday after school. We encourage pupils to come along and take part in craft activities, language games and quizzes and also enjoy some French cakes and snacks.  French film club provides an opportunity for pupils to enjoy French language films and of course enjoy some popcorn.

Language Assistant:
This year our French assistant is Laurie SGRO, who is from the Bordeaux region of France. She works with both KS3 and GCSE pupils to help them prepare for their French speaking tests. Our pupils enjoy hearing about her home life and background.

Subject/Departmental multimedia resources:
Fronter- pupils can use this resource to work on homework tasks and research.

ICT resources

We subscribe to Linguascope- an ICT interactive resource with colourful, engaging activities for all abilities and levels.
French Revision Workbook and Revision Guide with audio files @ www.pearsonschools.co.uk/mflrevisionaudio  is available for pupils at Key Stage 4.
