Learning objectives

Key stage 3:
The fundamental aim of the music curriculum is to develop pupils’ musical ability. All pupils are potentially musical and should be provided with learning experiences which develop their knowledge , understanding and skills in making and responding to music through active engagement in the core musical activities of composing , performing and listening

The music curriculum aims to empower pupils to achieve their potential and to make informed and responsible choices and decisions throughout their lives. It is about helping all pupils prepare for life and work

1  As individuals by: 

giving pupils opportunities to create personal meaning through composing, performing and listening activities;
enabling pupils to express their own feelings through music;
building an appreciation of the diverse musical tastes of others;
encouraging pupils to explore and experiment creatively in a variety of situations.

2  As contributors to society by: 

developing the skills central to understanding and responding to music;
developing pupil’s awareness of how music influences behaviour;
developing an understanding of music from different periods, styles and cultural traditions that are different from their own;
developing an understanding of the power of music in evoking mood and atmosphere

3  As contributors to the economy and the environment by: 

developing pupil’s ability to be discriminating consumers of music as a result of their own experiences in making and responding to music;
developing pupil’s awareness and understanding of the skills required to be successful within the music industry ( and how those skills and qualities are also highly valued throughout the world in all types of employment).

Key stage 4: 
GCSE Music aims to provide a valuable, rewarding and comprehensive course of study that broadens experience; develops knowledge, understanding and skills; promotes creativity; encourages personal and social development; and extends imagination.

Specifically, it encourages students to:

• continue to develop as individuals and as contributors to society, the economy and the environment through active engagement in musical activities;
• develop their understanding and appreciation of a range of different kinds of music, extending their own interests and increasing their ability to make informed judgements about musical quality;
• acquire the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to:
− communicate through music and to take part in music-making;
− develop a lifelong interest in music and appreciate the extent of music-related careers; and
− progress to further study, for example Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and AdvancedLevel (A Level); and
• develop broader life skills and attributes, including critical and creative thinking, aesthetic sensitivity and emotional and cultural development.

Key stage 5: AS/A2 Level
GCE Music aims to provide a worthwhile, satisfying and complete course of study that broadens experience, develops imagination, fosters creativity and promotes personal and social development. In particular, it encourages students to:

• extend the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to communicate through music and to take part in music-making;
• engage and extend their appreciation of the diverse and dynamic heritage of music, thereby promoting their spiritual and cultural development;
• develop particular strengths and interests, thereby encouraging lifelong learning and providing access to music-related and other careers; and
• recognise the interdependence of musical skills, knowledge and understanding as well as the links between the activities of performing, composing and appraising.

Subject/Departmental pupil  achievements:
Many of our pupils undertake instrumental lessons within school.  These students have the opportunity to achieve Rockschool, Trinity and ABRSM grades alongside preparing for GCSE and A Level practical examinations.

Consort have a long standing tradition of choral excellence in the Bangor community.  As such, they are invited to sing at many community events throughout the year.  They also compete in music festivals, most recently winning Bangor International Choral Festival in May 2015.   They have currently progressed to the second round of the Radio Ulster School Choir of the Year which takes place in February.

Every year the school hosts a Choral Workshop led by the choral directors from the Ulster Youth choir.  Many of our pupils have auditioned and been successful in gaining a place to sing in this prestigious choir, alongside other pupils in the province.

Clubs and Extra-Curricular Activities:
The Music Department hosts a variety of different clubs and musical groups, both at lunchtimes and after school.  The main activities are Junior, Senior and Chamber Choir, Wind Band, Theory Club and a variety of smaller instrumental ensembles.  Music is an important part of both school and community life with a number of key performances.  These include our Prize Night, bi-annual Musical Production, Carol Service and Spring Concert

Facilities

The Music department has 3 fully equipped classrooms with three adjoining practice rooms in each.    There are also two recording studios, complete with IMac computers, mixing desks and a range of recording equipment and software.  The Music department also has full access to a suite of Apple Mac desktop computer complete with a range of notational and sequencing software.  The department also makes good use of Ipads in Key Stage Three classes.  Two practice rooms used for peripatetic tutors and individual student practice.
