Departmental vision and aims: To provide opportunities to develop creative thinking and problem solving skills through, designing, research, communicating and manufacturing.

Learning objectives: 

Key stage 3: Promote creativity and problem solving skills Helping individuals appreciate their own and others  achievement’s through research, investigation and evaluation of products.

Year 8 Units of study

Health and Safety – Introduction to the importance of working in a safe manner in the workshop.
Electronics Toy- Introduction to basic electronic system s and manufacture using Plastic and Plywood.
Tray Puzzle – Development of Cad skills using 2D design and manufacture using Plastic and MDF.
Pull Along Toy- Developing the use of Mathematical skills in accurate marking out to make a traditional style childs toy in Redwood.

Year 9 Units of study
Health and Safety – Revision of work covered in Y8. Working with others  a safe manner in the workshop
Year 9 Key rack projectKey Rack Project – Development of skills in accurate measurement and working and shaping wood.
Wind Chimes Project –Introduction to working with metal and development of CAD skills to make a set of wind chimes.
Coat Hook Mechanism Project – This project combines wood, metal and plastic to make a model that demonstrates the basic principles of mechanisms. 

Year 10 Units of study

Display Stand Project – Development of skills in accurate measurement and woodworking joint cutting and fitting.
Novelty Clock Design – An opportunity to develop designing skills and make use of techniques and processes experienced in years 8 and 9.  Each pupil will make a unique clock design to demonstrate their skills in producing a final product from a developed design concept. 

Key stage 4: GCSE
To develop skills in researching, designing, reviewing, planning, making, testing and evaluating. Students will use these skills to design and make a fully functioning product.

Unit 5RM02 – Knowledge and Understanding of Resistant Materials

Key stage 5: AS/A2 Level
To develop students’ knowledge, understanding, skills and application for designing products. Students will use these skills to design and make a high quality product, a product that is fit for purpose, satisfy a clients needs and demonstrate their Design and Technology capability.

Facilities:  The Technology department is located on the ground floor within G block. It comprises of five fully equipped practical workshops linked to five planning rooms with access to two computer suites.

Subject revision resources: ProRevision – interactive app that can be used on personal  smart phones, tablets and PC’s in school and at home.  Revision clinics for KS4 and 5 in summer term.
